What Can I Do With a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management?

Strategic management has emerged in the 21st century as one of the most important jobs in the business world, primarily because of the constant state of change and increased competition.  Those who earn a master’s degree in strategic management are prepared to take on leadership roles in areas such as quality systems, logistics and product distribution, and even the criminal justice system.

Solid planning is key to business success. Strategic management involves a continuous effort to develop those plans, as well as manage and assess every aspect of an operation that impacts an organization’s goals.

Earning a Master of Science in Strategic Management means you have developed the kind of expertise organizations seek. It also means you will have many choices on where you want to apply your new skills.

Specializations in Strategic Management

Depending on the degree program, strategic management students often have a choice on what specific area of management they want to master. To give some idea of the careers available when you specialize, the following looks at careers within three specializations offered by Oakland City University: quality systems, logistics and product distribution, and criminal justice.

Quality Systems: Project Manager

With a focus on quality systems, students learn techniques and tools that help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively. This can include learning about methodologies such as Six Sigma, which focuses on reducing errors in business processes and cutting waste. All this gives graduates the perfect educational background for project management. Project managers run project teams that stay within budget, finish on deadline and achieve the project’s original, business-aligned goal.

The number of project managers worldwide is expected to grow 33% by 2027, according to the Project Management Institute.

Logistics and Product Distribution: Supply Chain Manager

With a focus on logistics and product distribution, graduates have expertise in how to oversee a supply chain. This is critical for modern businesses. There is increasing competition among companies to deliver products faster and with more accuracy. Also, with companies now selling services and products internationally, the supply chain has become more complex. Graduates from a master’s degree program in this area will find no shortage of jobs in every industry, as well as in government agencies that deal with complex supply chains.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a 7% increase in logisticians by 2026. In Indiana, that increase is projected at 11.2%, according to the BLS-powered Projections Central, which breaks down job numbers by state.

Criminal Justice: Policy and Programs Administrator

With a focus on criminal justice administration, master’s degree students learn how to translate strategic management skills into the world of criminal justice. While profit is not the motive, a well-run system that stays within budget while still providing needed services to the community is a complex task that requires leaders with expertise.

In the position of policy and programs administrator, a graduate might work with a District Attorney’s office or law enforcement agent to create, manage and assess the effectiveness of various programs aimed at reducing crime in the community. This can include oversight of departments such as records, research and community outreach. The BLS does not track this job specifically, but overall professions in criminal justice show growth in the coming years.

These are just some of the jobs that graduates can earn by entering a specialized field within strategic management. Earning such a degree puts you in perfect position to earn some of the top jobs in strategic management.
