Where a Business Administration Degree Can Take You

For students looking to make a smart educational choice that can enhance their careers, a degree in business administration can give them exactly what they want. While technology has revolutionized business and strategies continue to evolve, strong leaders are still the most important component of the business equation.

How important? A recent survey of more than 25,000 business leaders from around the world found that creating the next generation of leaders and retaining top talent are the biggest issues they face. They deemed them more important than cyber security or global competition.

That’s one reason that earning a business degree remains a popular choice for college students. For example, the National Center for Education Statistics reports that about 360,000 people earned a business degree in 2015.

The degree opens the door to many careers. It also can serve as a stepping stone to earning an MBA. Here’s a look at some paths a business administration career can take.

Degree Completion in Business

A BS in Business Administration is a popular choice for those already working within an industry who want to bolster their careers. In some cases, students may have already earned an associate degree or some college credit.

Returning to college in a degree completion program gives graduates more opportunity for better salaries and promotions. Students can apply to these programs through adult and professional studies programs where they can earn credit for past courses and, in some cases, work experience.

Specialization in Business

Some business degree programs, such as those offered by Oakland City University, give students a chance to specialize in a field of business. That’s important, as many employers look favorably on job candidates with expertise specific to their industry.

The following are three areas where students can specialize. The courses mentioned below come from the Oakland City University curriculum.

Management

As the survey mentioned above found, good leadership and management is a key component of future growth at most companies. Job numbers bear this out. The number of top executives is projected to grow 8% by 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Coursework in a BS in Business Administration program that focuses on management includes employee recruitment, training and retention; labor relations; strategic management and marketing; and management and leadership.

Human Resources

Human resource management jobs will grow 9% by 2026, according to the BLS. That’s not surprising given that HR managers now do more than simply make sure all the paperwork is done for new hires. The increasingly are playing a strategic role in how companies approach recruiting and retaining top talent.

Coursework in a BS in Business Administration program that focuses on human resources includes human resource law; human resource information systems; and introduction to human resource management.

Accounting

Accounting is another fast-growing field, with a 10% increase expected by 2026, the BLS reports. Many companies have started to use accountants in a more strategic role within the operation, tapping into their financial knowledge to help set business goals.

Coursework in a BS in Business Administration program with a concentration on accounting includes managerial accounting; accounting information systems; advanced accounting; and auditing.

Any of these specializations can open the door to challenging, rewarding careers. By entering a degree completion program and earning a BS in Business Administration, graduates position themselves to boost their careers in the right direction.
